In 2011, just one year after my Call to Bar, I made a decision that would test my patience, resolve, and faith in the legal system for the next decade and a half. I sued a prominent transport company, Teile Express Motors Limited.

The dispute began on what was supposed to be a straightforward journey from Abuja to Port Harcourt. I had paid for an air-conditioned bus, but instead endured a grueling, hot journey without AC. To make matters worse, upon reaching Onitsha around 6:30 PM, the driver stopped and abruptly announced that Onitsha was their final destination.

When I protested that my ticket was fully paid to Port Harcourt, I was met with indifference. I managed to get the phone number of the Abuja-based manager, who spoke to the local station staff. The “solution” they offered me? A mere ₦1,000 to “figure out” the rest of my journey. Left to my fate as dusk approached, I had to load my luggage onto my head, hop on a commercial motorcycle (Okada), and hunt for an RTC park. I arrived in Port Harcourt incredibly late, exhausted, and having completely missed a vital appointment.
Many told me to “let it go” and “chalk it up to experience.” Instead, I chose to use my newly acquired wig and gown to fight back and the fact that the court room was my farm kept me going.

What followed was a marathon. Over 15 years (we mobilised for heating notices and fought their delay tactics plus preliminary objection to the suit which was dismissed by Hon Justice Folasade Ojo before his Lordship’s elevation to the Court of Appeal), this case was transferred from one judge to another—four in total—due to retirements and elevations. But we persisted.
Recently, Hon. Justice Y. Halilu (the fourth judge to preside over the matter) delivered judgment in my favour, awarding general damages against Teile Express Motors Limited.

This victory is not just about the damages awarded today or the special damages lost due to unavailability of witnesses resulting from age of the case; it is a testament to the fact that no corporate entity is too big to be held accountable. To today’s younger lawyers: never let a breach of contract slide just because the system is slow. Justice delayed may test you, grinding slowly and surely, but when you stand your ground, justice will prevail.
